For greater than a decade, Darla and Sam have been the “it couple” of Farm Sanctuary’s Southern California shelter. They met when Darla got here right here in 2010; her former guardian had relinquished custody, and Animal Management positioned her in our care. She rapidly bonded with Sam, our eldest resident, and the 2 horses have been inseparable till Sam’s passing early final 12 months.
We moved Darla in with Joann and Zoe, the 2 different horses at our Acton sanctuary, so Darla wouldn’t be alone. Whereas nobody can ever exchange Sam, having others round helps Darla via her grief. We’ve even seen her sassy character return, as she generally vies with Zoe for the highest spot of their herd.
This Valentine’s Day, our hearts are with anybody, like Darla, who’s mourning a loss or wants a bit of further love.
